Guidelines for recording

RIGLYNE VIR DIE VERFILMING EN VOORLEGGING VAN ‘N VIDEO-OPTREDE:

Kontak die sameroeper van die afdeling indien u meer inligting benodig. Kontakbesonderhede is in die sillabus op die webwerf.

·  Geen professionele toerusting is nodig nie. Gebruik ‘n ‘handycam’, of selfs jou selfoon.

· Die belangrikste is dat die optrede duidelik sigbaar en hoorbaar is. Die deelnemer moet ten alle tye sigbaar wees. Vir die Musiek Afdelings sal die beoordelaar beide die deelnemer en die instrument wil sien.

· Verflim die optrede in een aaneenlopende skoot. Geen redigering word toegelaat nie. Video en klank moet ter selfde tyd opgeneem word.  Dieselfde geld vir uitvoerings, m.a.w. moenie die verskillende stukke na die tyd as een redigeer nie. Die deelnemer mag wel ‘n kort ruskans tussen stukke neem. 

· Hou die kamera stil. Gebruik ‘n driepoot, of plaas dit op ‘n stabiele oppervlakte, soos ‘n tafel.

· Verfilm in die ‘landscape’ posisie, m.a.w. hou die kamera horisontaal. Vir Spraak kan die ‘portrait’, of vertikale, posisie beter werk. 

· Kies ‘n stil vertrek wat goed belig is. Maak seker dat die lig van agter die kamera is en sodoende die deelnemer van voor belig. Moenie die deelnemer van agter belig nie, want dan is die deelnemer ‘n silhoeët. Gebruik ‘n neutrale agtergrond, geen deurmekaarheid, óf boekrakke, óf gedrukte gordyne nie.  

· Elke inskrywing het ‘n eie video. Byvoorbeeld: indien die kandidaat vir SJ03 en SJ04 inskryf, dan sal twee individuele video’s vir die twee inskrywings verfilm en voorgelê word. Dit geld nie vir uitvoerings nie, aangesien dit een aaneenlopende optrede is.

· Stoor die video’s in ‘n algemene formaat, soos .mp4 of .mov.

· Maak asseblief seker dat die video korrek ge-etiketeer is en volgens die inskrywingsbesonderhede opgelaai word (deelnemer se van, naam, klas, komponis en die titel van die werk).

RIGLYNE PER AFDELING:

MUSIEK:

Plaas die kamera teen ‘n effens hoek weg van die deelnemer af en maak seker dat niks, bv. ‘n musiekstaander, die deelnemer maskeer nie.

Klavier: Die beoordelaar wil die deelnemer ten volle sittend by die klavier sien, asook die hande en die klawers.  

Perkussie: Verfilming moet van die kant af wees sodat die beoordelaar beide die deelnemer se gesig en speeloppervlakte kan sien.

Sang: Die beoordelaar het nodig om die sanger, asook die begeleier, te sien. Maak seker dat die opname in die ‘landscape’, of horisontale, posisie verfilm word. Die deelnemer moet na die kamera toe sing. Verfilm die volle lyf sodat die postuur, asemhaling, ens. ook in ag geneem kan word. Dit is verkieslik dat die liedere uit die kop gesing word sodat die optrede in sy totaliteit beoordeel kan word: gesigsuitdrukkings, vokale uitdrukking, ens. is belangrik.

Blokfluit: ‘n Kant-aansig of ‘n diagonale kamerahoek is nodig. Die volle lyf van die kandidaat (verkieslik staande) en die hele instrument moet ten alle tye tydens die optrede sigbaar wees. Die musiekstaander moenie die gesig, vingers en instrument maskeer nie. Die hooffokus is op die deelnemer.

Strykers, Houtblasers en Koperblasers:  Die beoordelaar het nodig om die volle liggaam van die deelnemer, asook die gesig, vingers en die instrument, duidelik te sien. Dit mag nodig wees om die deelnemer teen ‘n effense hoek te verfilm sodat die volle lyf en instrument sigbaar is. Die beoordelaar wil albei die hande sien, so verfilm van ‘n afstand. Die deelnemer moet, waar moontlik, staande wees.

Kitaar: Plaas die kamera effens na die regterkant sodat die deelnemer se gesig, albei hande en die hele instrument sigbaar is. Verseker dat die musiekstaander nie in die pad is nie.

Ensembles en Orkeste: Die kamera moet verkieslik op ‘n driepoot wees. Al die lede en die dirigent moet in die skoot wees. Plaas die kamera op ‘n redelike hoogte (nie te ver af óf op nie).  Die musiekstaander moet nie die gesigte van die orkeslede maskeer nie.  Die dirigent moenie voor enige enige orkeslid staan nie.

Koor: Die hele koor moet in die skoot wees. Jy mag, op gekose plekke, in-zoom vir gesiguitdrukkings en om iets te uit te lig.

SPRAAK:

Die beoordelaar sal die volle lyf in die skoot wil sien. Dra direk na die kamera voor, asof die kamera die beoordelaar is.
Klank is hier van kardinale belang. Doen dus eers ‘n toetslopie om te verseker die klank hoorbaar en duidelik is.

For 2023:  same principles apply as f2f adjudication.  No reading of poems.  Poem/prosa must be delivered in one take, not broken up.

GUIDELINES TO VIDEO AND SUBMIT A PERFORMANCE ENTRY:

· No professional equipment is needed. You can use a handycam or even a cellphone.

· Most importantly is that the performance can be seen and heard clearly. The candidate should be visible at all times. In the Music Sections the ajudicator will need to see the candidate and the instrument.

· Film in one continuous take. The video may not be edited.  Audio and video must be recorded simultaneously. The same apply to Recitals, in other words don’t edit the pieces together. A short period of time may be taken between pieces.

· Keep the camera still.  Preferably use a tripod, or place it on a steady surface, like a table.

· Videos should be filmed in landscape mode.  Yet for Speech the portrait mode may be more preferable.

· Choose a quiet room which is well lit. Ensure that the light is from behind the camera. There should be no bright light behind the performer, otherwise there will be a silhouette. Choose a neutral background. No clutter or bookcases or printed curtains.

· Each entry needs a separate video submission. For example, if a candidate is entering SJ 03 and SJ 04, each entry must be recorded as an individual video and submitted accordingly. This does not apply to Recitals, which will be a continuous performance. 

· Files should be saved in common file formats, such as .mp4 or mov.

· Please ensure that the video is labelled correctly and uploaded with the details of the entry (Candidate’s surname, name, class, composer and title of the piece/work).

GUIDELINES PER SECTION:

MUSIC:

Place the camera at a slight angle away from the performer and make sure that nothing obstructs the view, e.g. a music stand.

Piano:  The ajudicator needs to see the candidate fully seated at the piano and see the hands and keys as indicated.

Percussion:  The ajudicator will need to see the hands and the feet – it is better if you film from the side. Participants must ensure that the playing surface is visible for the adjudicators to view. A side-on view is recommended.

Singing: The ajudicator will need to see the performer, as well as the accompanist.  Make sure that the recording is done in landscape mode. The candidate should sing to the person filming.  Full length of body should be captured, so that posture, breathing, etc., can be taken into account.  Therefore, the preference will be that the song/s is/are performed by memory, so that performance in its entirety can be appraised: facial expressions, vocal expression, etc., are crucial.

Recorder: A side-on or diagonal camera angle is needed.  The entire body of the candidate (preferably standing) and whole instrument must be in full view of the camera throughout the performance. The music stand must not obscure the face, fingers and instrument, but can be part of the video.  The main focus must be on the performer.

Strings, Woodwinds and Brass instruments: Full face and fingers need to be visible. The ajudicator will need to see the entire candidate, and the instrument and face, clearly. It may be practical to video the candidate from a slight angle to accommodate the instruments and the whole body. Full body posture needs to be filmed. The camera should be able to see both hands, so the video needs to be taken far enough away for that purpose. Where possible, the participant should be standing.

Guitar: Place the camera slightly to your right side so that your face, both of your hands and all the instrument are visible. Ensure that your music stand does not obscure the view.

Ensembles and Orchestras: The camera should preferably be on a tripod.  It should be far enough away to include all members of the ensemble  and the conductor. The camera should be at a reasonable height (not looking up or down too much). The music stands will need to be at a height where the faces of the performers are visible.  The conductor should not be blocking any member from the camera’s view.

Choir: Video the whole choir.  You may, at points, zoom in for facial expressions and to highlight certain areas.

SPEECH:

For speech, the ajudicator will need to see the whole body in the shot. Present straight on to the camera. You can pretend that the camera is the adjudicator.
Because the sound is here of utmost importance, do a test first to ensure that the sound is audible and clear.
The same principles apply as f2f adjudication.  No reading of poems.  Poem/prose must be delivered in one take, not broken up.
